A Fire Fighting Drill was conducted at Mata Jai Kaur Public School on 17 September 2024 to apprise the teaching, non-teaching and support staff about the hazards of fire and the techniques to fight it during a disaster. Mr. Sanjeev Sharma was invited to train the faculty about it. He began by elaborating that fires are caused by a combination of fuel, energy and oxygen. He clarified that the there can be various reasons of fire disasters such as electrical fire (most common in households), inflammable liquids and defective equipment etc.
Some important points were explicated such as – we should not panic, rather strive to keep our emotions controlled so that right action can be taken. We should move and stand near the walls in a public space if it is crowded. In case of electrical fire, main switch must be turned off and water should be thrown from a distance. The insulated wires need to be cooled down at first. If clothes of a person catch fire, then a blanket must be put on him/her.
Further, Mr. Sanjeev gave instructions regarding the usage of the fire extinguisher. He gave a demonstration on how to first remove the seal and direct the pipe towards the base of the fire. He also gave a hands-on practice to many staff members. The entire exercise was a very useful learning experience for all the staff members.
